Tobacco fills 40,000 hectares in Kushtia

Temptations by the tobacco companies are the key causes for increased tobacco farming in Kushtia district (a district of western region) which is a clear threat to food security and having the higher risk of other fatal diseases as well, says a report by online news portal, risingbd.com, on 6 January, 2014. Farmers are on the view that three
Tobacco Companies (BATB, Dhaka Tobacco and Abul Khair Tobacco) are pulling them with money and other incentives to grow tobacco. Initiatives by the Department of Agriculture Extension to inspire farmers in food-crop production go wasted for the incentives of Tobacco Companies’, the report adds.
